Ireland 35 Russia 0
Ireland secured five tries and a bonus in big win over Russia, but as we stated when giving our five best bets for the game, they couldn’t cover the handicap of -53 at even money. The win means Ireland will qualify for the quarter-final stages with a win over Samoa which takes place on Saturday week at 11.45am.
The quarter-final pairing will obviously be New Zealand or South Africa, but depending on who it will be remains out of Ireland’s hands, they must wait to see how Japan fair out against the Scots and Samoans. A couple of negatives from the game was probably the result not been as high scoring as many thought and also the injuries to some players, including Jordi Murphy who was flown over last week to replace the injured Jack Conan. Johnny Sexton was replaced at half time, however, we are not sure at present was this just as a precautionary or not.
Despite everything Ireland remain on top of the table, as you can see from the table below taken from RTE Sport’s Twitter page

Looking at the game itself, Ireland scored 5 tries, with Rob Kearney, Peter O’Mahony, Rhys Ruddock, Andrew Conway and Garry Ringrose all crossing the white wash. Ireland made a lot of errors in the game, but to be positive here , they got the bonus point and they got the win. Ireland got their first try after just 2 minutes. It was his fourth try in five games for Ireland. Munster man O’Mahony doubled the lead on 11 minutes after he got on the end of a kick through from Johnny Sexton. Russia did create problems for Ireland as the penalty count was mounting up. However, Russia were liable to give away a lot of penalties of their own and combination of these meant Russia had a player sin binned on 33 minutes. Rhys Ruddock who was incidentally named man of the match got the next try on the board.
The second half was very scrappy. Ireland failing to take any foothold in the first 20 minutes. Russia gradually coming into the game, but to be fair, they never really threatened. The team effectively known as the “Bears” should have been reduced to 14 men when Andrey Ostrikov committed a high clear out tackle on John Ryan, he was given a yellow. The bonus point was secured after the hour mark when Carty and Earls combined to set Conway in for a free run to try line from half-way. Garry Ringrose added the 5th and final try after some good work by Jordan Larmour.
Speaking to RTE Sport after the game Joe Schmidt said, You’ve got to do some logistical planning making sure that you know where you are going but there are two very open scenarios for us and we don’t control which scenario happens,”. He continued, “It’s up to Japan now and they will be very hard to knock off although Scotland are starting to build and that’ll be a huge match at the end of the pool but we don’t control that.””We’ve got to make sure that we get a result against Samoa.”
