Portugal 4 Ireland 0
The dreams of the Ireland U19 soccer team of reaching a European Final after a 4-0 defeat to Portugal in Yerevan on Wednesday night.
Ireland appearing in their first semi-final since 2011 were completely outplayed by the Portuguese. Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick who will now be looking to claim two European titles in a row. Portugal led 2-0 at the break and they will now play either France or Spain in the final.
The first goal came courtesy of a penalty. Joe Hodge committing the foul on Joao Mario in the box. It was a clear penalty and it was well taken and scored by Vitor Ferreira. Ireland should have scored though as they had a couple of goal chances, but they couldn’t find a way through. Barry Coffey’s shot was cleared off the line, while Mark McGuinness hit the crossbar. Ireland would be dealt a massive blow just before the break. Ramos scored his first goal of the game heading home from the back post.
Portugal were going through the motions in the second half and were superior to their Irish counterparts. Ramos scored his second goal after some poor Irish play. They lost possession inside their own half, before Joao Mario got the ball, before crossing to Ramos who finished to the net. Portugal then got their fourth of the game in stoppage time in the second half when Ramos completed to send the reigning champions through to yet another final on the big stage in European football. For Ireland, we should be proud, it’s great to see the young talent and let’s hope we can see them in the coming years representing Ireland at senior level in European Championships and World Cups.
