Clare 2-11 Limerick 1-14
Shannonside neighbours Limerick and Clare played out a dramatic 2-11 to 1-14 draw in a wintry Ennis on Sunday afternoon. Indeed it was the only game in Division 1A to survive the dreadful conditions.
Tony Kelly and Shane Golden got on the scoreboard early for the Banner but a defensive error allowed Gearoid Hegarty. David McInerney had a miss timed pass which was Hegarty gathered and burst away from the Clare defence to finish to the net. Scores were very hard to come by owing to the difficult conditions, Peter Duggan missed four frees, his counterpart on the other side Aaron Gillane fired over some nice points to give the Treaty men a healthy 4 point lead at the break.
On 37 minutes the Banner were on level terms when Shane Golden who put in a massive workload throughout. Gary Cooney a second half substitute introduced by joint manager Donal McInerney and Gerry O’Connor also went on to raise a white flag. Aaron Gillane pointed two frees for John Kiely’s charges, before Peter Casey knocked over a fantastic score for the current All-Ireland Champions. 2018 All-Star Duggan put Clare back in front in the closing minutes with a cracking goal. Golden this time was the provider as he offloaded the ball just outside the 21m line and the big Clooney/Quinn man powered through the Limerick defence to finish past Nickie Quaid giving him no chance. Gillane and Duggan traded frees, before Gillane fired over a further two frees to leave the sides level.
Limerick were already coming through into this game, the Clare full forward line failed to register a single score which is not good going forward. The Banner will have to rely on other results now to determine a quarter final place or not
